Donating a Kidney, Then Competing in the AKC National Agility Championship

This week, we’re sharing more inspiring stories from competitors headed to the Companion Events Extravaganza in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania March 27th-30th.

Today’s feature is Paige Port, who will be competing in the AKC National Agility Championship with her Border Collie Ember.

On December 27, 2013, Paige donated a kidney to her friend and fellow dog trainer, Laurie Williams.  The pair had met at a dog event and when Laurie, who had been on dialysis for a year, posted on Facebook that she needed a kidney, Paige volunteered.

All Paige asked was that the surgery be scheduled early enough that she’d still be able to go to the AKC National Agility Championship. Now that’s dedication!

After months of testing, cross-matching and blood tests, the transplant took place and both women are doing well. Paige is looking forward to running Ember at the NAC. Good luck, you two!

Awesome! So happy you could compete. I had a kidney transplant 10 years ago (my sister gave me one of hers) and I am competing also. Wonderful that you had such a great friend who donated, what a special gift that is. Good luck!!
