Club Spotlight: Harrisburg Kennel Club and One Lucky K-9 Unit

While K-9 Units are essential to police work, they’re unfortunately one of the first things to be cut during financially tough times. We wanted to spread the wonderful story of the Harrisburg Kennel Club and the essential contributions they made to Harrisburg Police Department’s (HPD) K-9 Unit in a time of need.

In addition to previous commitments to provide the unit’s dog food, the Harrisburg Kennel Club learned of a need and purchased a new dog for K-9 Unit trainer Officer Meke, who required a replacement canine after his current dog Zeus was diagnosed with cancer.

The Blue and Grey Cluster and Keystone Cluster clubs also pitched in when they agreed to cover the costs of yearly licenses, re-certification training and testing.

In March of 2013, Corporal Meik with Zeke by his side went to assist in locating an armed and dangerous suspect. Zeke was shot in the neck by the suspect but continuedto work, protecting the life of Corporal Meik and the other officers who had followed Zeke into the woods.

Penn State’s Life Lion emergency trauma helicopter swooped in and rushed K-9 Zeke to an emergency veterinarian.  Thanks to collective and speedy efforts, Zeke was home within several days and returned to patrol work by the end of April. To say thanks, the HKC made a donation to Penn State’s Life Lion and will be underwriting a special Life Lion training course for area EMTs, paramedics and other emergency personnel to educate on the treatment of animals in emergency situations.

The HKC K-9 Foundation was recently established to increase awareness of the importance of K-9 Units in maintaining public safety as well as support other canine related causes. The Foundation has been fortunate with support from area clubs including the Mason Dixon Kennel Club and the Penn Ridge Kennel Club.

The Harrisburg Police Department K-9 Unit wouldn’t be possible if not for HKC and other area club’s generous donations and hard work; we applaud these efforts immensely.

Don’t forget that Zeke will be at the American Kennel Club / Eukanuba National Championship this year in Orlando, FL, where he will be presented with the AKC Humane Fund’s Award for Canine Excellence on the Saturday night, December 14th. Get your tickets now! Can’t make it to Orlando?
